Vinka Opens Up About the Real Struggles of Being a Working Mother in Music
Vinka is done pretending motherhood and music mix easily. The Swangz Avenue singer opened up recently about how hard that balance really is. She welcomed her daughter at the start of 2021. During a YouTube interview, she revealed she only breastfed for four months. Work called her back sooner than she wanted.
Her first big test came early. She had to travel to South Sudan for a show, leaving her newborn behind. The booking had been made months before she even gave birth. She couldn’t cancel it. But leaving broke something in her.
“I started questioning whether what I was doing as a mother and what my child would think of me. Balancing is the hardest thing but with time you get used to it,” she said. That guilt didn’t fade fast. It sat with her. She kept wondering if she was failing as a parent, even while doing what her career demanded.
Vinka handles things differently than some of her peers. Many artists bring their kids along on tour. She doesn’t. Vinka always leaves her daughter at home instead. She says it protects her from disruption.
It’s her way of keeping motherhood and her career in separate lanes, even when that separation hurts. Still, that method isn’t foolproof. One trip to LA proved that. She brought her daughter along that time. Her plan was simple. Drop her at a friend’s place, do the show, and rush back quickly.

Jet lag ruined the plan. She fell asleep instead. Her daughter was left crying at her friend’s place far longer than expected. “I thought during this time, I would rush and do the gig and come back. By the time I came back, she was crying so much. Imagine going to the stage and receiving a call that your child is crying and you have to first speak to them. It is very hard, motherhood, the work; balancing all that is very hard but we try,” she said.
That moment stuck with her. Picture standing backstage, ready to perform. Then your phone rings. Your baby is crying and needs you first. Few people talk about that side of fame.
Vinka isn’t complaining, though. She’s simply being honest. Motherhood pulls in one direction. Music pulls in another. Somehow, she keeps finding a way to hold both together.
Her story isn’t unique to her. Countless working mothers face the same tug-of-war daily. Vinka’s willingness to speak about it openly makes the conversation a little less lonely for others walking that same path.

For now, she keeps showing up. On stage and at home. Neither role gets easier. But Vinka keeps trying anyway both in music and as a mother.
