Ragga Dee Says No Politicians at His Funeral, Recalls Backlash Over Alex Mukulu’s Send-Off

Veteran singer Ragga Dee has a clear request for whenever his time comes: keep politicians away from his funeral. He shared this while speaking about the recent celebration of Alex Mukulu’s life at the National Theatre. Ragga Dee was among several artists who honored the late Ugandan playwright, actor, instrumentalist, and author.

During the interview, he voiced frustration over how a member of parliament behaved at Mukulu’s funeral, allegedly claiming the government would not celebrate the man’s life despite his contributions to the creative sector. That moment stuck with him.

Ragga Dee said politicians often hijack funerals to push their own agendas instead of mourning alongside grieving families, and he does not want the same thing happening at his own send-off. “When I die, I do not want politicians to speak at my burial. I saw politicians on Alex’s death saying that the government wouldn’t help him and many other things,” he said.

He added that he booked the burial site himself, on the day the first planning meeting took place, and pointed out that the venue is government property open to any Ugandan, not just officials. “Politicians should not try this on my burial,” he said.

Asked how he would rather be remembered, Ragga Dee said he wants mourners who actually knew him to speak, sharing real memories of what he did in his life rather than reciting formal praise.

“I would like a good send-off with people not just praising me but they speak about the good things I have done because they see it,” he said. If politicians do attend, he added, they should stick to acknowledging his death and leave politics out of it entirely.
