Cindy Sanyu Says Retirement Isn’t on Her Mind Right Now | Video
Cindy Sanyu wants everyone to know her music career is far from over. Speaking to BBS TV, the singer pushed back on suggestions that she might be thinking about retirement, arguing that her career is only just taking shape. She explained that retirement, for artists, rarely means walking away from music entirely.
Instead, it usually looks like a shift into something new within the same world. “We all retire but retirement doesn’t mean leaving the industry,” she said. “Some people can retire into mentoring, some can retire into writing, into managing; all that can be retirement.” For her, none of those chapters have started yet.
Her comments come right after a big weekend for her career. Cindy Sanyu added an international accolade to her name when she won Best Reggae Dancehall Artist for her song “Nayise Naye” at the Basadi In Music Awards in South Africa. The win carried extra weight, too, she became the first Ugandan in the four-year history of the awards to take home that category. Organizers covered all her expenses for the trip, a detail that underlined just how significant the recognition was.
That momentum is shaping what comes next for her. With growing support from across the continent, Cindy Sanyu says she’s now setting her sights on something bigger: an African tour. She made clear that stepping back is the last thing on her mind. “It is too early for me to quit everything,” she said. “It is just the beginning especially with the international recognition, I plan on capitalizing on it. If we can have an African tour next year, that is what I’m looking at right now.”

For Cindy Sanyu, this win looks less like a finish line and more like a launchpad, one she plans to use to reach audiences well beyond Uganda’s borders.
