Bobi Wine Reveals Family Fled Uganda After 2026 Election
Opposition leader Bobi Wine, better known as Robert Kyagulanyi, provided worrying concerns concerning his family ’s safety after Uganda’s 2026 presidential election. Speaking at the Geneva Human Rights Conference 2026, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president explained why he has been mainly out of the public glare in Uganda.
Security forces besieged his home soon after the January 15 vote. They occupied the property for weeks and remain there, he claimed. This overwhelming pressure drove his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, and their children to depart the country. They left out of true fear for their lives. Kyagulanyi kept their current whereabouts undisclosed.
Kyagulanyi directly accused Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and President Museveni’s son, of issuing a stern instruction. He stated the directive ordered his capture “dead or alive” shortly after the results were released. Military soldiers then raided his apartment. They allegedly tormented family members, ridiculed his wife, and undressed her while hunting for him.
These events followed the Electoral Commission’s proclamation that President Museveni won with 71.65 percent of the vote. Kyagulanyi placed second with 24.7 percent. He rejected the outcome, citing to voter intimidation, irregularities, and severe repression of his supporters.
